Woodwind was an alternative newspaper intended to foster 'an optimistic sense of community through the arts' in Washington, D.C. This issue includes a report on the tribulations faced by co-founder Michael Schreibman in attempting to present concerts at the L'Enfant Theatre and the need for a youth-friendly music venue in the D.C. area; M. Rutt on the importance of embracing biomorphic design; a review of 'Explorations', a show at the National Collection of Fine Arts by MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies featuring work by Wen-Ying Tsai, Gyorgy Kepes, Les Levine, Stephen Antonakos, Panayiotis Vassilakis (Takis) and Stan VanDerBeek; a review of Michael Wadleigh's film 'Woodstock' and a revival of Disney's 'Fantasia'; Ernest Hawkins reviewing productions of Lansford Wilson's 'Serenading Louie' at the Washington Theater Club and Slawomir Mrozek's 'Enchanted Night' and 'The Police' at Arena Stage; Richard Harrington reviewing a show by Loudon Wainwright III and the Great Speckled Bird at the Cellar Door; John Zambetti on a concert by Redbone at Emergency, Zambetti interviewing Boston band Country Funk; Stephen Whealton on a 'PDQ Bach' concert by Peter Schickele; Kevin Osgood rating local radio jingles; reviews of new LPs, including self-titled releases by Exuma and Redbone, Ed Sanders' 'Sanders' Truckstop' and Little John's 'Up and Down'; a detailed review of Tasty , a locally published underground comic; Mark Loewinger recommending new books; poetry by Charlie Goretsky, Dian Gish, Mary Lynn Klein, and Craig Watson; illustrations by Robyn Johnson Ross; ads for local businesses and events; and film, theater, dance, gallery and concert listings.
